hen Ignacio and I made the decision to move back east, we knew that the thing we wanted most in our new home was to have outdoor space, especially living in the middle of a city. An area where we could retreat, entertain, and truly make our own. Nestled in the heart of Washington, D.C.’s historic Capitol Hill neighborhood, the garden has become an extension of our townhome both aesthetically, and functionally. It's truly an oasis of calm I can escape to whenever I'm facing a creative block.

uring the design phase, I knew I wanted the garden to have a sense of formality while still evoking a casual sensibility. One of the most dramatic elements in the garden is the 150-year-old Maple tree that completely envelopes the entire area and provides the most beautiful spectrum of color throughout the seasons. I love incorporating unexpected design elements and touches in any space, and we sourced and converted an antique street lantern and hangs like a chandelier above the dining table. Suspended eight feet from the tree, the lantern grounds and centers the space.
etting the table. When entertaining, I love to incorporate various textures and materials in a tablescape. Sticking to a neutral palette has always helped me maintain a sense of calm, restrained elegance, and against this backdrop the form and shape of the individual elements and touches incorporated are amplified. Patinated vases, and vintage dinnerware juxtaposed against beautiful crisp linens, gleaming stemware, and polished flatware from our friends at Williams-Sonoma and Williams-Sonoma Home is a perfect balance for me, made even more beautiful surrounded by nature in an outdoor setting.
